General health services in Croatia
The standard of healthcare in Croatia is generally very high but expensive. All visiting foreigners are entitled to free emergency treatment such as first aid. Some EU countries including the UK have agreements with Croatia which enables visitors to obtain free medical care whilst visiting the country. This requires the form E111 which should be carried with you at all times. Obtain one from your UK post office before you travel. In any event a private medical or travel insurance policy is recommended. You must check the policy to ensure it includes the activities that you will be undertaking. Some policies exclude scuba diving, rock climbing etc. 
 

Health precautions
In spite of generally good health care system, it is best to take a few sensible precautions during your holiday. The most important is to avoid overexposure to the sun, wear a hat and use a high-factor suntan lotion, especially during the hottest part of the day (11 a.m. till 3 p.m.). Drink plenty of water to avoid exhaustion and dehydration. Tap water in Croatia is generally safe to drink, but if you feel uncomfortable, bottled spring water can be bought everywhere. Wild beaches are usually not cleaned from sea urchins that like Croatia's clean waters. If you notice their presence, the best solution is to wear plastic or other adequate shoes to enter and get out of the water safely.

Immunisations
No special immunisations are required for a visit to Croatia.

Children´s health in Croatia
Children will enjoy Croatia providing you take adequate precautions.
For the beach, you may want to consider some plastic shoes to avoid contact with sea urchins and hot sand. Always use a high factor suncream. From 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. it's best to keep children out of the sun or well protected. For nights it's best to have a mosquito repellent ready if you notice their presence. Consider a mosquito net for prams and pushchairs.

 

Insects and bugs
There are very few dangerous snakes and bugs in Croatia however mosquitoes can be a problem especially around the lakes. Make sure you have amply creams and sprays to deter them.

Common ailments you may suffer from
Sunburn
You may be surprised how quickly you suffer from sunburn, especially along the Adriatic coast. Make sure you use ample suncream, sunblocks and wear a hat wherever possible.

Prickly heat
This is an itchy rash caused by excessive perspiration trapped under the skin. Keeping cool and using a mild talcum powder can help prevent this.

Heatstroke
Long periods of exposure to heat and lack of fluids can lead to this dangerous and sometimes fatal condition. Symptoms include high body temperatures and feeling unwell. The best course of action is to cool the body immediately and seek medical advice.
