The history of organized naturist vacations in Croatia dates back to the 1930's and the island of Rab is rightly referred to as the pioneer of naturism on the Adriatic. However it is certain that naturism on the island started long before that. Croatia was the first country in Europe to start with the concept of commercial naturist resorts, when in other European countries naturism was limited to member clubs only. The real naturist boom began in 1960's when first naturist camps were opened in Istra and Dalmatia. In those days more than 100,000 naturists spent their holidays in Croatia each year. The oldest naturist resort in Croatia is Koversada which in 2001 celebrated its 40th anniversary. Koversada is in fact a small islet and today it is connected by a small bridge with the mainland. In 1961 Koversada became officially opened for naturist tourists. As Koversada was becoming more popular, the islet became too small and in 1965 resort spread on the nearby shore. In 1972 Koversada hosted the Naturist World Congress. In the course of the years Koversada grew to be modern and one of the largest and and the most popular naturist resorts in Europe. Soon after Koversada, other resorts opened their doors to naturists as well: Valata naturist resort (opened in 1968), Monsena (in 1988 hosted Naturist World Congress), Solaris and many others.

Today Croatia offers a wide range of naturist facilities: beaches, camping, hotels, apartment and bungalow villages. There are more than 20 official naturist resorts that spread on 8,220,000 sq. meters. Naturist resorts offer 46,100 camping units, 5,300 beds in apartments, bungalows or hotels. In addition to that, official naturist beaches (outside of naturist resorts) offer a place under the sun for over 20,000 sunbathers. In adition to official naturist resorts and beaches, there are also many so called 'free beaches'. These are unofficial naturist beaches, sometimes controlled and maintained by local tourist authorities and sometimes not. They can be found everywhere on the coast.
Naturist beaches in Croatia are marked as "FKK". This is abbreviation for German word "Freikörperkultur" (Free Body Culture). The FKK sign is ubiquitous all along the Croatian coast.

Naturism represents an important part of the Croatian tourism industry. Some estimates say that about 15% of all tourists in Croatia are naturists or nudists. That means more than 1,000,000 naturists visit Croatia each year. Most of them come from Germany and Austria, The Netherlands, Italy, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary. Considering the country's liberal tradition toward naturism and a large number of naturist resorts and beaches, Croats are surprisingly still a bit shy when it comes to naturism and make up less than 5% of all guests in naturist resorts. Compared to the situation of the 1980's, the number of organized naturist in Croatia has significantly decreased in the last decade. But still, naturism is strongly suported by official Croatian goverment bodies.

Naturist etiquette

Where to take off clothes?
Croatia has many unofficial naturist beaches where nudity is well accepted. Most of the beaches outside of town's centers have naturist and textile parts but don't risk causing offence by stripping off in the 'textile' areas. If you are unsure which is which, as a rough guide the further you walk from the point of access, the more acceptable nudity is likely to be. Somewhere naturists and textiles are mixed together. Use your common sense. If you don't see anybody else in the nude, don't be the first one.

Photography
Be careful where you take photographs. Photographs and videos should only be taken with the permission of those in the shot. While there will be no problem with snapping your family or friends, you should seek prior consent of anyone else who might also be in the photo. Not everyone wants to end up in a stranger's photo album. Taking photos of other, unknown, nude people is not acceptable and can raise objections from those being photographed on the beach. Often they can be banned from the beach. Attempting to take photos or video of other people's children is likely to provoke the deepest suspicion and cause to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law - especially any covert photography or video.

No Overt Sexual Activity.
Nudity is not an invitation for something else. No overt sexual activity is permitted.

Privacy
Respect the privacy and space of others. While naturists are a very friendly bunch, many are at a resort or a beach for quiet time. Body language should tell you they don't want to be disturbed. It's not wrong to look for new friends - but it is rude to intrude when you're unwelcome.

Sit on a towel
For hygienic reasons, use your own towel when sitting on benches, chairs, pool furniture and other furniture, specially picnic table tops (if you really have to sit on table tops in the first place). Also, don't sit on anyone else's towel or blanket.

Tranquillity
Naturist beaches are havens of tranquillity, please be considerate about playing amplified music or radios. Use earphones for if possible, and if requested to 'turn it down', do so willingly.

Theft
Theft on a naturist beach is fortunately rare, but keep an eye on your property and that of neighboring sunbathers when they move away from it. Chances are, they'll being doing the same for you. Respect the property of others.
