Bakar
is situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Bakar. The historic
nucleus of the town was registered in 1968 as a monument of culture.
The town is divided into two areas, the first of them situated higher
and named "Grad" where we find the Castle, the first known
building of the town. In the year 1530 it formed the beginning of
the settlement nearer to sea, with protective walls, which were
destroyed in the 18th and 19th century.
The lower part of town is formed from two parts "Zagrad"
and "Primorje", near to the coast, developed later, having
middle-class inhabitants. It was built in the time of the mercantile
when the sea traffic was at its highest. The character of both parts
is of the Mediterranean type with winding, narrow, steep and stair-like
streets and beautiful views.
The
town offers many historical buildings worthy of seeing, including;
The Hospice dating from 1526, The Parrish
House from 1514, The Bishopshouse with
the old coat of arms from 1499 on the front, The Parrish
Church of St.Andrews, from 1830 (constructed on the site
of an old church), The Church of St.Margaret
in the port, from 1668, constructed by order of Peter Zrinski,
The Church of St.Cross in the town and The Church
of St.Mary from the 16th century. There are also several
impressive palaces belonging to wealthy families, all worth seeing.
